Obesity is a disease worldwide. It is defined by WHO as excessive accumulation of fat in the body to the extent that health and well-being is adversely affected.

70 & above.Mega Obesity

Obesity is actually a predator in shadow as silently it brings in multiple comorbidities including cancer that affect quality of life and most
importantly longevity.

Remedy :-

  • Dietary changes
  • Lifestyle modification
  • Medication

These are very important components in battle against obesity but these are overpowered by morbid obesity.

The only cure for morbid obesity is Bariatric Surgery. It involves restriction of food passage and / or reduction of absorption of nutrients.
It not only causes significant weight loss which is not achievable by conservative approach but also ameliorates above mentioned comorbidities Cancer risk will be reduced dramatically.

Guidelines for Indication of Surgery
  • BMI > 37.5 without any comorbidities
  • BMI >32.5 with obesity related comorbidities e.g Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia etc

Types of Bariatric Surgeries

Sleeve Gastrectomy

It involves restriction of stomach by removal of a part of it.It is suitable for young morbidly obese of lower range of BMI.

Roux- en – Y Gastric Bypass

It involves removal of a significant portion of stomach leaving behind a pouch and it is amalgamated with another portion of intestine.It is for a higher level of morbid obesity.

Mini Gastric Bypass/One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (MGB/OAGB)

Almost similar procedure as RYGB

Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD – DS)

It is for Super Obese and onwards.
